One of the biggest heating allowances
New Hampshire’s heating and cooling allowance was $1,018 in USDA’s October 2025 table, among the five largest in the country, and there is a separate $217 electricity-only amount. For a Manchester retiree living alone on $1,600 of Social Security with $1,000 rent plus heat and $110 in medical bills, that works out to about $306.
How New Hampshire handles cases
The state uses a standard medical deduction for older and disabled members and can skip the recertification interview for them. Families leaving cash assistance receive transitional SNAP, and past drug felonies do not disqualify anyone. New Hampshire’s FY2025 payment error rate was 8.85%.
Reporting changes in New Hampshire
New Hampshire combines simplified and change reporting and certifies for six or twelve months, so your notice tells you which changes to report and by when. If you are moving from Vermont, note that Vermont’s gross limit is 185% of poverty ($4,212 for three) while New Hampshire’s is 200% ($4,554); Maine and Massachusetts also use 200%.
