SSI recipients and older residents
Massachusetts runs a standard Combined Application Project with Social Security, so people on SSI who live alone can be enrolled in SNAP without a separate application, and the elderly simplified application covers older residents without earnings. The state uses a standard medical deduction and accepts telephone signatures. DTA also operates a Restaurant Meals Program.
Boston rents and the shelter cap
A couple in Boston earning $2,600 with $1,800 rent and a heating bill hits the $769 shelter cap and would get about $233. Massachusetts’s heating allowance, $914 in USDA’s October 2025 table, is high, but it only adds to a working household’s benefit until the cap is reached.
Benefits are loaded during the first 14 days by the last digit of the Social Security number. Child support you pay is excluded from income; past drug felonies do not disqualify. The state’s FY2025 error rate was 12.49%.
