A heating allowance and a phone allowance
USDA’s table lists Rhode Island with a $844 heating and cooling allowance and a $27 phone standard (October 2025 – September 2026), and no separate limited allowance. Rhode Island’s own October 2025 notice described a standard medical deduction for people 60+ or disabled with $35 to $218 a month in medical costs; this calculator uses actual costs instead.
A Providence retiree living alone on $1,500 of Social Security, with $950 rent plus heat and $150 in medical bills, would get about $306.
Restaurants and reporting
Rhode Island runs a Restaurant Meals Program, offers on-demand interviews and the elderly simplified application, excludes child support you pay from income, and does not disqualify past drug felonies. Its FY2025 payment error rate was 12.42%, which would place it in the 15% cost-share tier.
Rhode Island’s 185% line
Rhode Island uses 185% of poverty for broad-based eligibility, computed here as $4,212 for three with USDA’s rounding method; DHS’s own chart may differ by a dollar. Massachusetts and Connecticut both use 200%. Rhode Island certifies most households for 12 or 24 months and uses simplified plus change reporting.
