Food Assistance Program · FY2027
Alabama Food Stamp Calculator
Alabama’s Food Assistance Program is run statewide by the Department of Human Resources (DHR). From October 1, 2026 a family of three can receive up to $808 a month. Alabama keeps the 130% gross limit ($2,960 for three) but, through broad-based eligibility, does not count savings and skips the net income test.

Why Alabama’s line is lower than most
Most states using broad-based eligibility raised their gross ceiling to 200% of poverty. Alabama did not, so a household of three earning more than $2,960 before taxes is over the line unless someone in it is 60 or older or disabled — those households are judged only on net income. What Alabama’s rule does buy is freedom from the asset test: a bank balance or a paid-off car will not cost you eligibility.
Example: a parent of two in Birmingham earning $1,900 a month, paying $850 rent plus a power bill for heat and air, would get about $647. Alabama’s heating and cooling allowance used for that is last year’s $637; DHR had not posted an October 2026 figure we could verify.
How DHR handles cases
Alabama certifies most households for 12 months under simplified reporting — between renewals you only have to report if your income rises above the gross limit. Older and disabled applicants with no earnings can use Alabama’s Elderly Simplified Application Project, and the state uses a standard medical deduction instead of tallying every receipt (FNS State Options Report). Child support you pay is subtracted from income.
Money lands between the 4th and the 23rd, keyed to the last two digits of your case number. Alabama’s FY2025 payment error rate was 9.52%, which under the 2025 law would make the state pay 10% of benefit costs from FY2028; that changes the state budget, not your benefit.
