Error rates and the 2025 law
New Mexico’s FY2025 payment error rate was 16.81%, one of the highest in the country. Because 1.5 times that exceeds 20%, the 2025 law delays New Mexico’s share of benefit costs until FY2029; after that the state’s share depends on its later error rates. Household benefits are calculated the same way regardless.
Getting and keeping benefits
An Albuquerque parent of two earning $2,000 with $850 rent plus heat would get about $566, using the $419 allowance from USDA’s October 2025 table. New Mexico spreads deposits over 20 days by the last two digits of the Social Security number.
The state offers the elderly simplified application, can waive recertification interviews for elderly and disabled households, gives transitional benefits, and does not disqualify past drug felonies. Some areas had a partial time-limit waiver on October 1, 2026.
New Mexico and Texas
New Mexico’s 200% line ($4,554 for three) and lack of an asset test are more generous than neighboring Texas, which stops at $3,757 and $5,000 in assets, and Oklahoma at $2,960. New Mexico certifies most households for 12 or 24 months under simplified reporting.
