How Texas counts your car
Under Texas’s broad-based rule, one vehicle is excluded up to $22,000 in value; anything above that counts toward the $5,000 limit (FNS BBCE chart). Households that fail the Texas test can still qualify under the federal rules with a $3,000 limit, or $4,750 with someone 60+ or disabled.
Texas Works Handbook figures for October 2026
Revision 26-4 of the handbook (section C-121.1) sets a $464 standard utility allowance, a $417 basic utility allowance and a $64 telephone deduction from October 1, 2026. It also gives people 60+ or disabled a standard medical expense of $170 (minus $35) in place of itemizing, unless actual costs are higher — this calculator uses actual costs, so enter at least $170 if that is your case.
Two Texas examples: a Houston parent of two earning $2,200 with $1,000 rent plus air conditioning would get about $552; a San Antonio widow on $1,300 of Social Security with $800 rent, utilities and the $170 medical standard, about $258.
Late-month deposits and new store rules
Households certified after June 1, 2020 are paid between the 16th and the 28th, based on the last two digits of the eligibility determination group number. Since April 1, 2026, Texas SNAP cannot buy sweetened drinks or candy. Texas’s FY2025 payment error rate was 9.34%, the 10% cost-share tier.
