What estimates leave out

What SNAP buys from November 1, 2026

North Dakota’s Healthy Choice waiver targets November 1, 2026: from then, SNAP will not pay for sweetened beverages, energy drinks or candy.

Heat, seniors and the farm economy

North Dakota’s heating allowance, $772 in USDA’s October 2025 table, is well above its $286 basic and $126 single-utility amounts, so paying for heat makes a large difference over a long winter. The state uses a standard medical deduction for older and disabled members and certifies most cases for six or twelve months.

Self-employment such as farming or ranching is counted after business costs, which this calculator does not model; enter your net self-employment income as pay. People with past drug felonies are not disqualified. North Dakota’s FY2025 payment error rate was 9.89%.

Six- and twelve-month cases

North Dakota certifies households for six or twelve months under simplified reporting: between renewals you report only if gross income goes above the limit — $5,500 a month for four. Minnesota and Montana share North Dakota’s 200% line; South Dakota, to the south, uses the federal $3,575 and an asset test.
