The soda restriction was stopped
USDA approved West Virginia’s request to restrict soda purchases, but the federal court’s June 22, 2026 order in Aragon v. Rollins vacated the approval, so it cannot be implemented.
No phone-only standard
USDA’s table lists West Virginia with heating and cooling ($518), basic ($330) and single-utility ($88) allowances but no telephone-only standard, so a household that pays only a phone bill gets no utility allowance here. These are October 2025 figures.
Benefits arrive over the first nine days by the first letter of your last name — names beginning with B, X, Y or Z are paid on the 1st. West Virginia certifies for 12 or 24 months under simplified reporting. Its FY2025 payment error rate was 6.69%.
West Virginia’s line versus Ohio’s
A family of three in West Virginia can earn up to $4,554 gross; across the river in Ohio the limit is $2,960. Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky match West Virginia’s 200%. West Virginia applies a modified disqualification for drug felonies rather than a lifetime ban, and certifies most cases for 12 or 24 months.
